Social Action Committee

The Social Action Committee provides opportunities for spiritual and personal growth through social action, meaningful action that has an impact on the world outside our congregation. We sponsor programs to directly engage members and friends of UUCMC in social action. We provide information and education to the UUCMC on peace and social justice issues of importance to the membership. We engage with other organizations outside UUCMC and let the UUCMC community know about opportunities to attend or volunteer at activities sponsored by these other organizations.

10/10/10 Letter Writing Campaign

On Sunday, October 10, members of the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Monmouth County in Lincroft participated in writing more than 80 letters to climate negotiators, legislators, and regulators demanding action against human-caused global warming and climate change. A specific energy-saving program of carpooling to the Meetinghouse was also initiated. These activities were organized for October 10, 2010 (“10/10/10”) as part of the nationwide appeal by Bill McKibben and website 350.org.

The Sunday service on 10/10/10, celebrating UN Sunday, was based on the theme chosen by the Unitarian Universalist United Nations Office, “Ethical Aspects of a Climate Treaty”. Previously the congregation had adopted as policy a strong statement urging action to counter global warming and climate change through individual and collective activities.

Share the Plate PDF Print E-mail

Share the Plate is a congregational outreach program that supports non-profit organizations that benefit our community and world and express our Unitarian Universalist values. Together, the Social Action Committee and the congregation select ten charities, one for each month from September through June. Half of the contributions to the collection plate go to support our congregation, the other half to the Share the Plate recipient for that month. Two years ago our Share-the-Plate charities received more than $8,500; last year they received more than $9,100.
