Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Monmouth County Social Action We have been certified as a Green
Sanctuary. From the July-August 2008 UUCMC Newsletter Share the Plate: At the June 8 Congregational Meeting, five additional recipients were chosen for the 2008-09 year: Doctors without Borders, Family Resource Associates, Inc., Habitat for Humanity, Murray Grove Retreat and Conference Center, and Planned Parenthood of Central New Jersey. The five previously chosen by the Social Action committee are: The Center in Asbury Park, Garden State Equality, GreenFaith, The Kitchen at St. Marks, and The Wellness Community. We will confer with RE in choosing which month to assign to each Recipient. Planned Parenthood of Central of NJ, our May recipient, received a check for $735.15. The June recipient was the Rosenberg Fund for Children. There is no Share the Plate program for July and August. UU Legislative Ministry/NJ: Thanks to those of you who completed their survey, we sent in the following results, ranked 1-5 in order of importance.
At present we have no “champion” for UULMNJ. If interested, see Jim McCorkel or Irene Gibson. Green Sanctuary: Steve Knowlton and Rich Held are continuing to talk with Sun Farm about additional PV panels for the Earth Room roof. LGTB/Welcoming Congregation: Carol Ann Lee is working on starting an Interweave group for next year. More on this in the September newsletter. Peacemaking/Peace and Justice: The peace vigils continue on Thursdays in Red Bank (corner of Broad and Harding) from 5:00 to 6:00 pm, and on Saturdays at noon at Fort Monmouth. The Kitchen at St. Marks: Molly Walker and a friend will serve lunch on the 4th Friday in June. Anne Owens and her family will serve in July and August. We will be providing them with fresh produce from our Community Garden. Extra hands will be needed for harvesting our bounty and transporting the vegetables to St. Marks. If you can help, contact Elaine Held or Irene Gibson. Nuclear Watch: The Nuclear Regulatory Commission refused to sign off on the safety of a corroded radiation barrier at the Oyster Creek nuclear plant and asked for more information. Nationally, ten Washington-based organizations issued a statement calling for rejection of nuclear subsidies: Clean Water Action, Environment America, Environmental Working Group, Greenpeace, Natural Resources Defense Council, Nuclear Information and Resource Service, Nuclear Policy Research Institute/Beyond Nuclear, Physicians for Social Responsibility, Public Citizen, Sierra Club, and Union of Concerned Scientists. Family Promise/Bread and Roses: On June 22, Skip Leib led the guests in drumming at Family Promise at St. George’s Episcopal Church in Rumson. Judy O'Keefe and Peter Bellincampi will organize the meals and overnight hosting at St. Luke’s on June 17 and 20 and would welcome help. Contact them at Bellkeefe@aol.com. There will be no Social Action table during the months of July and August. If you would like to purchase any Fair Trade, organic decaf coffee – beans or ground – see Irene Gibson. Our next Social Action meeting will be Monday, Sept. 7, at 7pm.
